Gilsonite® HMA Modifier reduces asphalt road construction project cost while providing HSE improvements

New German worker safety requirements present a challenge for road paving.
German law requires a significant reduction in MAK values (carcinogenic substances in asphalt fumes per m3) by 2024. This presented a challenge when the second largest autobahn in Germany needed renovating. The surface course required a mastic asphalt strong enough to withstand heavy car and truck traffic. Historically, Trinidad Lake Asphalt (TLA) has been the primary additive for mastic asphalt, however the contractor was unable to achieve the MAK health and safety requirements with TLA.

One section of the road was paved using TLA while a different section was paved using Gilsonite® HMA Modifier, a safe, naturally occurring hydrocarbon resin. Gilsonite® uintaite is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and non-mutagenic. - Gilsonite® uintaite has a lower high-temperature viscosity which facilitated reduced hot mix temperatures
- Lower water content, fewer volatile materials and lower mix temperatures enabled Gilsonite® to produce significantly less fumes

- The lower sulfur content of Gilsonite® resulted in a more pleasant work environment
