ENVIRONMENT
MINING WITH MINIMAL IMPACT
Genuine Gilsonite® brand uintaite comes only from our mines in Utah, where we use mining methods designed to minimize surface disturbance. Once mining is complete, the land is restored to its natural state in compliance with federal, state and local standards.
In contrast, foreign miners in countries like Iran, Colombia and Argentina extract asphaltite using destructive strip and open-pit methods with little or no environmental oversight. These knock-offs are often misleadingly marketed as “gilsonite,” but they cannot match our standards for quality or environmental responsibility.
NATURALLY BETTER®
Gilsonite® uintaite has a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional alternatives. With no chemical transformation during processing, it emits considerably less CO2 than refined petroleum products.
Precision Recovery
Nothing wasted, everything gained – that’s our mining motto. Our precision extraction methods are designed to make full use of the material we recover.
Clean Remote Energy
We’ve significantly reduced emissions from multiple remote mine sites by replacing diesel generators with clean power from a local plant. This change delivers a substantial reduction in CO₂ emissions each year.
Harnessing the Sun
In remote terrain, safety depends on clear communication. We operate five solar-powered radio stations at our mine site, keeping crews connected while using renewable energy sources.

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
We track and calculate our Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon emissions to identify opportunities for improvement. Since 2022, we’ve reported our data, climate opportunities, risks and targets through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
Our Environmental Sustainability Committee – formed in 2023 – is driving initiatives from recycling wooden pallets to reducing energy consumption, ensuring we make meaningful progress year after year.
